More ways to connect, less time together.
Reach is at an all time high and time in the same room keeps falling. The group chat is not the friendship. This is the observation even hand starts from.
You can reach anyone you have ever known in under ten seconds. School friends, cousins in three time zones, a colleague from two jobs ago. The group chat is always warm. Someone is always typing.
Now count the hours you spent last month in the same room as a friend, doing nothing in particular, with nowhere to be next. For a growing number of people in Indian cities, that number is close to zero, and it has been shrinking for years while the other number, the reach, went to infinity.
The substitution nobody noticed
It happened gradually enough to feel like nothing. A visit became a call. A call became a voice note. A voice note became a reaction to a story. Each step was cheaper and easier, and each step kept the label. We still call all of it staying in touch, as if the tenth of a second it takes to tap a heart carries the same weight as an evening.
The group chat is the minutes of a meeting the friendship never has.
This is not nostalgia and it is not an argument that the internet is bad. The tools are genuinely good at the logistics of people. What they cannot carry is the thing itself, because the thing itself is made of unhurried time in a shared place, and that is precisely what does not fit in a thread.
Why presence got expensive
When something becomes rare it becomes valuable, and unbroken attention in the same room is now rare enough that people pay to recover it. Hotels advertise bad signal as a luxury. Dinners sell the phones-in-a-box gimmick as the attraction. We built an economy that monetised distraction and are now building one that monetises its absence.
It should not cost money to sit with your friends. The fact that it increasingly does is not a business opportunity. It is a warning.
Why we start with rooms
This is the reason even hand builds physical things instead of an app. An app that helps people connect would be one more layer of the substitution. A dinner, a ten hour day, two nights off grid: these are not content about togetherness. They are the thing itself, scheduled, because in this decade even friendship needs a calendar invite to survive.
The bet is simple. Put people in a room with no feed to escape into, and the old skills come back on their own. They were never gone. They were just never given the hour.
