Cutting the hours you actually can

When the job needs the screen, the win is not zero. It is finding the hours that were never required in the first place.

The short answer

If the job needs the screen, stop counting total hours and count the hours you did not choose. Work hours are load. The reflex pickups, the second screen during meetings, the hour after dinner and the fifteen minutes before sleep are the ones that come back. Protect the two edges of the day and the total falls without touching the work.

Why the total is the wrong number for you

Two people report nine hours. One writes and reviews for seven of them. The other watches the same three feeds. The number is identical and the lives are not. Total screen time measures exposure, not damage.

The useful split is chosen against unchosen. Chosen hours you would defend to someone you respect. Unchosen hours are the pickups you cannot account for. Only the second kind is worth a plan.

What is actually cuttable when the work is not

Add these four up honestly. For most operators they are two to three hours a day, and none of it is the job.

Making the work hours cost less

How to know it worked

Do not watch the total. Watch one number: how many times you picked the phone up without deciding to. When that falls, the hours follow, and the work is untouched.

Where this usually breaks

It breaks on the argument that being reachable is the job. Being reachable at every minute is not the job, it is a habit that nobody asked you to keep. The proof is a single day where you are unreachable by design and nothing burns down.

That is DEAD AIR: ten sealed offline hours, and a written plan for the days after.

Asked next

My screen time is high but it is all work. Is that a problem?

Not by itself. The problem is the two to three unchosen hours sitting on top of it, usually at the edges of the day.

Can I reduce screen time without changing my job?

Yes. The mornings, the last hour, the second screen and the gap pickups are all outside working hours and add up to more than most people expect.

Do app limits help if I need the apps for work?

Rarely. Distance at fixed hours works better than a limit you can dismiss while you are in the middle of something.
