Chronically offline is not a detox.

It is not the absence of technology. It is knowing that you can put the thing down, and having a life worth putting it down for.

The phrase started as a joke between us and then would not leave. Chronically offline. It is the opposite of the compliment the internet pays itself, and it describes something we kept noticing in the people we most wanted to spend time with.

What it actually means

Not because we hate technology. Because we like real life more.

What it is not

It is not deleting everything and moving to a village. It is not judging anyone for using their phone, which would be a strange position for people who build software. It is not a thirty day challenge you fail on day four. And it is definitely not a personality you perform online, which would be the funniest possible way to miss the point.

We use phones, we use AI, we use the internet all day. The position is that the tools should be pointed at something. When they are not, they point themselves at you.

A direction, not a standard

Nobody is chronically offline. It is a bearing rather than a badge, and most weeks we drift off it. The useful test is not how many hours your screen time report shows. It is whether you can name one hour this week that was fully yours, and whether you would like more of them.

If the answer is yes, that is the entire qualification for being here.
