Discomfort you choose, in company.
Walks that are too long. Water that is too cold. Nights outside. Not content, not a challenge to post, just the body doing something hard with people who also turned up.
What it is
A day or a few days outdoors with a difficulty that is real and a phone that is not there. Distance, altitude, cold, weather. The kind of thing that used to be normal and is now unusual enough that people film it instead of doing it.
Why difficulty is the point
Comfort is the most efficiently delivered product of the last twenty years, and a life made only of it goes soft in a way that is hard to notice. Something that costs your body a little brings your attention back faster than any technique.
Nobody is filming
No summit photos, no reel, no proof. What happens is for the people who were there. If the only reason to do a hard thing is the record of having done it, the hard thing was not the point.
How it will run
Small groups, led by people who know the ground, with a plain brief on what your body will be asked for. Everything gets stated before you commit: distance, terrain, weather risk, cost.
The plain facts
- Size: Small groups, eight to twelve
- Length: One day, or two nights out
- Phones: Sealed, one carried by the lead for safety
- Where: Within reach of the cities the list asks for
- Cost: Not set. Stated in full before anyone commits
Coming. This is committed direction, not a scheduled programme. The retreat and the dinners come first, and these follow once the room is big enough to fill them properly.
